Hungarian Apple Pie Bars

🛒 Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 apples, peeled and grated
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • Juice of ½ lemon

For Brushing:

  • 1 egg yolk

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Apple Filling

Grate the apples and squeeze out excess liquid.

Mix apples with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and breadcrumbs. Set aside.

2️⃣ Make the Dough

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

Add butter and mix until crumbly.

Add eggs, sour cream, and vanilla. Knead into a smooth dough.

Divide dough into 2 equal parts.

3️⃣ Assemble the Pie

Roll out the first dough layer and place it into a greased baking tray.

Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough.

Roll out the second dough layer and place it on top.

Brush with egg yolk and use a fork to create decorative lines on top.

4️⃣ Bake

Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35–40 minutes or until golden brown.

Let cool completely before cutting into squares.
