Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing tops)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in cold buttermilk and gently mix until dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
  5. Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently pat to about 1-inch thickness.
  6. Fold dough over itself 3–4 times for flaky layers.
  7. Cut biscuits using a round cutter and place on a baking sheet close together.
  8. Brush tops lightly with melted butter.
  9. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until tops are golden brown.
  10. Serve warm with butter, honey, or jam.

Tips

  • Keep ingredients very cold for extra flaky biscuits.
  • Don’t twist the biscuit cutter — press straight down.
  • For extra richness, brush with butter immediately after baking.
